Brief Introductory Note
Small tea growers (STG) have become an integral part of the economy of Assam of late. The prospect of earning a steady income has attracted many rural people to start tea cultivation. However, the STGs are not free from unfair treatment, both by the buyers of green leaf as well as by the brands and retailers. If small tea growers—men and women—can be collectivised into processing and selling their own tea, then there could be an opportunity to break this vicious cycle.
Grassroots Tea Corporation (GTC) works with small tea growers and operates at multiple levels of value accrual. GTC empowers tea farmers to add value to their product by helping them to improve agricultural practices and encouraging them to eschew use of dangerous chemicals and pesticides and to go natural, thereby getting a higher price for their product. GTC collaborates with STGs in setting up manufacturing units to process quality tea, including orthodox and green tea. GTC further collaborates to aggregate, repack, and sell their products at wholesale and at tea auction centres to bulk buyers for better price realisation. Further, GTC collaborates with STGs to market processed traceable, healthy, high-quality tea through multiple channels, including under the brand name equifarmtea.
GTC is technical partner in a Project, Udyamini-Rural Women Enterprises Programme (Udyamini-RWEP). RWEP envisages collaborative actions in the areas of clean energy, digital empowerment, value chain evolution, research, communication, and ecosystem intervention to build a robust environment for rural women entrepreneurs (RWEs) in Assam and West Bengal.
Grassroots Tea Corporation (GTC) provides technical support to 1000 women entrepreneurs among small tea growers in the Karbi Anglong district, Assam. The programme ‘Reinforcing Sustainable Rural Women Entrepreneurs in the Tea Value Chain and Initiating Corresponding Ecosystem Changes’ demonstrates innovative and scalable cluster-level enterprises of women from small tea grower households in Assam that manufacture artisanal tea and create platforms that will transform the ecosystem for RWEs.
